Turkish Marbling by Ezgi Sert

Monday, September 2nd, 2024

Ezgi Sert is an Ebru artist based in Melbourne who has participated in various local and international workshops and demonstrations. Ebru, also known as Turkish marbling art, is a UNESCO heritage-listed traditional Turkish art form that involves creating vibrant and intricate patterns by sprinkling and dropping color pigments onto a tray filled with a water-based solution. Special brushes, traditionally made from rose branches and horsehair, are used to manipulate the colors and create designs. These patterns are then carefully transferred onto paper.
Ezgi takes pride in performing this unique art form, adhering to centuries-old techniques and using specially prepared materials. Ebru art, with its origins in the Ottoman Empire, has been celebrated for its ability to create stunning and ephemeral patterns that reflect both artistic skill and cultural heritage. The process involves layering colors and manipulating them on the water surface before transferring the design, resulting in one-of-a-kind, hand-crafted pieces. Join Ezgi at Tesselaar Tulip Festival Turkish Weekend on Saturday & Sunday, 14-15 September 2024.

Turkish Coffee

Monday, September 2nd, 2024

Turkish coffee combines special preparation and brewing techniques with a rich communal traditional culture. The freshly roasted beans are ground to a fine powder; then the ground coffee, cold water and sugar are added to a coffee pot and brewed slowly on a stove to produce the desired foam. The beverage is served in small cups, accompanied by a glass of water, and is mainly drunk in coffee-houses where people meet to converse, share news and read books. The tradition itself is a symbol of hospitality, friendship, refinement and entertainment that permeates all walks of life. An invitation for coffee among friends provides an opportunity for intimate talk and the sharing of daily concerns. Turkish coffee also plays an important role on social occasions such as engagement ceremonies and holidays; its knowledge and rituals are transmitted informally by family members through observation and participation. The grounds left in the empty cup are often used to tell a person’s fortune. Turkish coffee is regarded as part of Turkish cultural heritage: it is celebrated in literature and songs, and is an indispensable part of ceremonial occasions.
