Why a Turkish Weekend?

The tulip originated and was first cultivated in Turkey over 400 years ago. The flower gained importance in Turkish society, their form was championed by the Sultan’s.
The very first Tulip Festivals were celebrated in Turkey in the 1700’s during a time known as Lalè Devri (Tulip Era) it was at this time that the Tulip was the symbol of the Royal Court.

The original Tulip Festival were celebrated at the Sultan’s Palace which was decorated with thousands of tulips. Guests dressed so their clothes matched the many colours of the beautiful tulips. Mirrors were placed throughout the Royal gardens so light was reflected and the tulips seemed endless. Crystal bowls of coloured water were placed throughout the gardens to compliment the colour of the flowers. Songbirds hung from cages and musicians played throughout the gardens to provide the perfect atmosphere. At night candles were lit in crystal lanterns and placed throughout the gardens and cast an enchanting light across the flowers, candles were placed on the backs of tortoises to further increase the gala of the show, their slow wanderings illuminating the blooms in a capricious display.

Tulip motifs were and still are used prominently throughout Turkey in artistic words such as painting, tapestry, tiles, poetry and clothing.

Today the Tulip is still a important flower and symbol in Turkey.

Melbourne Airport – a world class facility and ideal operating environment for airlines to build their Australian operation

Melbourne Airport

Melbourne Airport provides a world-class, 24-hour per day curfew-free gateway to Melbourne and South-Eastern Australia, serving almost 25 million passengers per annum (5.6 international and 20.6 million domestic passengers).

Melbourne offers its airlines significant operational benefits, cost advantages and outstanding customer service. Amongst the many benefits, Melbourne offers a single terminal precinct for domestic and international passengers, a strong domestic network and excellent access from major and regional highways with only a 20-minute journey to the Melbourne CBD.

Melbourne also boasts the lowest cost base of any major airport in Australia. Sydney and Brisbane’s passenger charges are 52% and 63% more expensive. Melbourne Airport’s charges are also locked in until 2012.

Melbourne Airport continues to invest in significant capital works projects to cater for the rapidly growing market and deliver future capacity for growth. Stage one of the airport’s $330m international terminal expansion was completed at the end of 2009 providing passengers a world-class facility and more A380 compatible boarding gates.

Arts and culture rise from 120-year-old maritime disaster

A 120-year-old maritime disaster that bound Turkey and Japan in friendship is to be celebrated in Melbourne in the middle of 2010.

A cultural and arts project is planned to showcase the countries’ culture and history, and aims to build ties between Australian Turkish and Japanese citizens, reduce the social isolation of new migrants to Australia and broaden local understanding of both countries.

The Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Turkey and the Japan Foundation will be sending musicians to Australia to perform at the joint events.

The countries’ friendship began with the visit of the Ottoman Empire’s Ertugrul Frigate to Japan in 1890. The voyage aimed at building inter-country links but ended in tragedy when the ship became disabled in a storm and eventually hit reefs off Oshima Island, Japan. An estimated 533 officers and sailors were killed and Japanese vessels helped to rescue about 69 survivors who were later taken home to Istanbul in two Japanese corvettes. (more…)
